An Allison Automatic Transmission and a Hydraulic Retarder for Marcel Savard
Last June in Rivière-Mattawin, "Camions Trois-Rivières", the Western-Star dealer for the region, and Allison Transmission organized a hands-on demonstration of a Western Star logging tractor owned by Marcel Savard from St-Roch-de-Mekinac. This new Western Star truck is equipped with an Allison automatic transmission and an optional Allison hydraulic retarder that delivers up to 600 hp of retardation power. Its Detroit Diesel engine delivers 515 hp and 1650 lbs ft of torque. The vehicle was made available for ride and drive on the logging trails of the area. As these demonstrations occurred under a steady rain, it was easy to see the rig's performance on soft and slippery hills. The ease with which it was possible to stop and restart with a full load of logs in the middle of a steep grade or do U-turns in a narrow logging road amazed all the participants. This is the first Western-Star truck with an Allison transmission in the fleet of Mr. Savard who also owns a Freightliner equipped with a 600 hp engine and an 18-speed manual transmission. The interest in Allison transmissions for use in logging operations is now a reality, with hundreds of them in use in Quebec. The addition of a hydraulic retarder makes the truck operation even easier and quieter.
