Hammond Introduces 24V “No-Idle” Battery-Powered AC for Heavy Equipment
Hammond Air Conditioning has expanded its popular battery-powered AC (BAC) product line to provide “no-idle” cab-cooling solutions for heavy off-road machines. Hammond is well-known in the construction and mining industries as a pioneer in integrated “Arctic Wolf” aftermarket AC systems for all makes and models of mobile machinery. In the mid-2000s, when “no-idling” laws came into effect, Hammond’s “Arctic Breeze” 12V BAC systems showed the trucking world how to “stay cool without wasting fuel”, allowing operators to keep their cabs comfortable when their engines are shut down. Building on the success of Arctic Breeze truck AC, Hammond has now released 12V and 24V Arctic Breeze systems designed for heavy off-road loaders, excavators, and haulers. Arctic Breeze systems get their power from banks of AGM deep cell batteries. The batteries charge while the engine is running and the machine is producing. Between production cycles, operators can shut the engine down and the Arctic Breeze BAC system kicks in. “It’s not unusual for this kind of equipment to spend as much time idling as it spends working,” said Jeff Stuyt, engineer at Hammond. “Everyone in the industry knows that idling is the least efficient use of diesel fuel. So saving thousands of dollars a year right there is possible if you can shut the engine off when it’s not earning.” All those hours of idling have a huge cost, too, in engine wear, maintenance downtime, and service parts. All those hours are also on the meter when it is time to resell the machine. An Arctic Breeze BAC will require 25 to 40 amps at 24V DC under full load, with the compressor on maximum. The 12V truck AC units are known to keep cabs cool all through a hot summer night while the driver is sleeping. On heavier machines, 2 Group 31 100 amp/hr 12 V batteries in series for 24 V are expected to run for up to 2 hours on maximum. The Hammond team has over 30 years experience helping customers and dealers right-size and fit their cooling system. Arctic Breeze AC systems are surprisingly simple in design. Installation kits supplied by Hammond come complete with all of the hoses, wiring, and mounting hardware as well as the evaporator unit that will mount in the cab where it can circulate cool air on the operator. The condenser/compressor box can mount anywhere that is convenient on the equipment. The system also comes with a low voltage disconnect to prevent the batteries from discharging too deeply.
