City of Lethbridge Future-Proofs Critical Water Treatment Plant Upgrade with Kryton’s Hard-Cem®

 

 

 

Kryton International, a global leader in smart concrete waterproofing and durability solutions, recently announced that its Hard-Cem® integral abrasion resisting admixture has been specified for the major upgrade of the City of Lethbridge Water Treatment Plant in Alberta, which includes a new high-rate clarifier and major infrastructure improvements to support future growth.

As a critical piece of municipal infrastructure, the upgraded facility must stand up to decades of continuous exposure to the abrasive and erosive forces of flowing water, grit and sediment. To ensure long-term durability without adding steps to an already demanding construction schedule, the project team specified 60 t of Kryton’s Hard-Cem®. General contractor, Graham Construction, is leading the build, with ready-mix concrete supplied by BURNCO Rock Products.

Traditional dry-shake surface hardeners add installation steps, increase finishing complexity and can delaminate over time. Hard-Cem®, by contrast, is mixed directly into the concrete at the batch plant. This integral approach delivers abrasion and erosion resistance throughout the structure, simplifies placement and finishing, and helps keep the project on schedule. 

“On substantial infrastructure projects like the Lethbridge Water Treatment Plant, long-term durability and performance are a primary concern. Hard-Cem allowed us to supply concrete providing enhanced abrasion resistance without adding complexity during placement or finishing,” said Toby Piper, general manager, BURNCO Rock Products. “It is one of many practical solutions BURNCO offers to meet the needs of our community for many decades.”

Because Hard-Cem is batched right into the concrete mix, surface applications are not necessary, making the placement and setting of the product relatively fast.

The stakes for durable water infrastructure are significant. Maintaining an appropriate concrete cover is essential for protecting the reinforcing steel. According to a new analysis from U.S. Corrosion Services, the annual cost of corrosion in the U.S. has jumped from $276 billion in 1998 to about $2 trillion today. Kryton believes building long-term durability into critical facilities from the outset is a first line of defense in extending their service life and controlling costly future repairs.

“Water treatment infrastructure is under constant attack from erosion and abrasion, and the cost of premature concrete wear falls squarely on taxpayers,” said Kari Yuers, president and CEO of Kryton. “By building Hard-Cem into the Lethbridge Water Treatment Plant, the city is more than doubling the wear life of its concrete and protecting a multi-generational investment before the first drop of water is ever treated.”

The result is a high-performance concrete system designed to support the reliability and service life required for critical municipal infrastructure. Construction is scheduled for completion in December 2027.
