Following the CEO transition plan previously announced by Bentley Systems, Incorporated, Nicholas Cumins recently took charge as CEO. Mr. Cumins succeeds Greg Bentley, the eldest of the 5 brothers who founded Bentley Systems, who becomes executive chair of its Board of directors.

Nicholas Cumins is the first CEO in the company’s 40-year history who is not a Bentley family member, marking a significant milestone in the company’s development. The Bentley brothers redefined what was then computer-aided design (CAD) software when they developed MicroStation as a groundbreaking engineering application platform. Four decades of innovation and more than 120 acquisitions later, Bentley Systems is the leading provider of infrastructure engineering software, with its infrastructure digital twin solutions used to design, build, and operate critical infrastructure around the world.

The transition to Mr. Cumins’ leadership comes at a critical time for infrastructure sectors. There are not enough engineers to accomplish the work required to achieve global sustainability targets while also adapting aging infrastructure vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

Before his promotion to CEO, Nicholas Cumins served as Bentley Systems’ COO from January 2022. He joined Bentley Systems as chief product officer in September 2020 prior to the company’s IPO. Previously he was general manager of SAP Marketing Cloud and served as chief product officer of Scytl, a platform for online voting, and as senior vice president of Product with OpenX, a pioneer in programmatic advertising. Before OpenX, he had already served in a variety of senior roles at SAP, including product management, corporate strategy, and business development.

The Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) confirms that Ray Orb will be stepping down from his role as president at the end of August 2024. The acting president will be William (Bill) Huber, SARM’s current vice president.

Mr. Orb, elected to the SARM board in 2004, said the decision not to finish out his term comes after 20 years of dedicated service, good timing, and a desire to start experiencing life in a different way.

“After 20 years of proudly serving SARM, the timing just feels right,” said Orb. “Since announcing back in March that I wouldn’t be seeking re-election, the transition has gone so smoothly that there wasn’t any real reason to delay stepping down. SARM is in incredibly capable hands with Bill Huber as acting president, and I’m looking forward to more family time, so it just makes sense.”

The official search for an elected president will begin in January 2025 and conclude with an election during the SARM Annual Convention in March 2025. All nominees for president must be elected officials in a rural municipality. Until then, Mr. Huber is confident stepping into the role and is looking forward to the challenge.

“My passions in life are people, rural Saskatchewan, and farming,” said Bill Huber, “so I couldn’t be more honoured to step into this acting position. Having held the role of vice president for the last four years, I know first-hand what a great leader Ray Orb is and how significant his contributions have been. It’s my privilege to continue that work.”

As for Mr. Orb, he’s looking back – and forward – with immense gratitude: “It’s been a tremendous privilege to listen to and learn from all the people I’ve worked with and represented. That strength of community and pride in rural Saskatchewan is something I took with me everywhere I went. That’s something that will never change.”

SARM is the independent association representing rural municipalities in Saskatchewan, serving as the primary advocate for its members before senior governments.

The Lifting Equipment Engineers Association (LEEA) recently announced the appointment of Alex Beltrao as director of Compliance. The role is responsible for the LEEA’s knowledge and sharing it to benefit members. This is done by providing technical advice, developing guidance documents and codes or participating in development of new standards or pieces of legislation on behalf of the members.

“Being director of Compliance requires a mix of technical background and an understanding of global standardisation and regulatory frameworks,” said Mr. Beltrao. “It was therefore a great opportunity to use my skills and knowledge to help achieve LEEA’s ambitious new goal of reaching the 5000 members.”

A civil engineer by training, with a decade of experience in designing steel structures, in 2013 Alex Beltrao moved to Brussels to work for the European Committee for Standardisation as Programme manager for the construction sector. Here he oversaw development of European standards and the bridging between the technical committees, CEN members and the European Commission. In 2019 he started working for Tata Steel in the UK in his last role before joining LEEA as director of Compliance.

Director of Compliance is the 3rd key new senior management appointment made by LEEA this spring as part of the executive management team. The team will be working closely with LEEA CEO Ross Moloney in the strategic development of the Association.

“We are proud to welcome Alex to the LEEA team. He brings tremendous experience to the role of leading and managing our compliance work, with responsibility for all aspects of policy, research, and audit quality, which is a crucial aspect of the support that LEEA provides to members,” said Mr. Moloney.
