The Unimog Gives a Hand at the Großglockner

A team from Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks spent 2 weeks on a winter test with 4 Unimog along the Großglockner High Alpine Road. As part of the Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks Alpine testing program, the team supported Großglockner Hochalpenstraßen AG in clearing the pass road. The developers carried out numerous technical tests with the winter service vehicles and the corresponding attachments.

At 3798 m, the Großglockner is the highest point in Austria, between Carinthia and Tyrol, and the most important peak in the eastern Alps. The Großglockner Alpine Route is one of the most beautiful scenic routes in the world. Over a distance of 48 km, it blends almost seamlessly into the mountain landscape, offering unforgettable views of majestic peaks, glaciers, valleys and verdant forests - a sight you won't soon forget!

The developers focused on the new UNI-TOUCH operating system with movable center console, large touchscreen and individually assignable buttons. The joystick can be attached to either the right armrest of the driver’s or passenger’s seat, making it easier to operate the attachments. In addition to ergonomic improvements, UNI-TOUCH is designed to enable more efficient and therefore more economical implement operation. The aim is for all new attachments to be operated via UNI-TOUCH in the future.

During the test period, the conditions were difficult, with an constant risk of avalanches and continuous fresh snow leadint to poor visibility. The breakthrough nevertheless succeeded as planned at the end of April. Every year, the High Alpine Road, which connects the Austrian states of Salzburg and Carinthia, opens to traffic from May.
