BEWI Opens Norway’s First EPS Recycling Facility

BEWI, a leading European provider of packaging, components, and insulation solutions, has opened a new EPS (expanded polystyrene, commonly known as styrofoam) recycling facility in Norway, the first of its kind in the country.

The facility is located at the company’s production site for insulation solutions in Fredrikstad, enabling efficient collection and use of recycled material directly in the production of new products.

“We are proud to open a recycling facility here in Fredrikstad,” said Jens Christian Hernes, managing director of BEWI’s insulation operations in Norway. “Using in-house recycled material directly in the production allows us to meet the growing demand for insulation products with recycled content, driven by both the market and regulations.”

The recycling facility is part of BEWI’s broader collection and recycling initiatives across Europe. Equipped with modern sorting and recycling technology, the plant has an EPS recycling capacity of up to 3500 t/y. The collected material originates from insulation and packaging from the region and is granulated or mechanically processed into raw material for new insulation products, such as GreenLine EPS and Terra XPS.

“This project would not have been possible without close support from our partners. A special thanks to Norwegian Retailers' Environment Fund, Sintef Community, and local stakeholders,” added Mr. Christian. “Effective EPS recycling relies on collaboration across the value chain, from collection and logistics to recycling and production. These partnerships are essential to make the system work in practice and at scale.”

BEWI has strong ambitions to increase EPS collection and elevate the use of recycled content in its product offering. In 2025, the group collected more than 38 000 t across Europe – more than any other insulation company. In addition to the new facility in Norway, BEWI operates recycling plants in Sweden, Czechia, Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, and has minority interests in a recycling facility in Poland.

BEWI’s core offering is circular packaging and energy-efficient solutions for the building sector. The group has ambitious targets for profitable growth and for decarbonising both its customer offering and own operations through increased use of recycled materials and renewable energy sources. Innovation and industry partnerships, as well as BEWI’s people and culture, are integral to driving long-term value creation.
