Epiroc BEVs Support AF Ghella in Tunneling Construction Project in Norway
Epiroc has delivered several battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) to joint venture AF Ghella in Norway for use in the construction of new water distribution tunnels. So far exclusively used for mining operations, this is the first time Epiroc’s market-leading battery-electric machines are supporting success in a civil construction project. Since May 2023, AF Ghella is operating several of Epiroc’s material handling BEVs with Batteries as a Service. Currently 6 Minetruck MT42 SG machines and a Scooptram ST14 SG loader are in operation in the construction of a new tunneling network for drinking-water distribution in the city of Oslo that will secure a long-term safe and reliable drinking water supply for Norway’s capital. From May 2023, the Oslo municipality required utilization of non-emission machinery on this specific project. “AF Ghella chose equipment from Epiroc for several reasons,” said Nils Ola Hoff, project director, AF Anlegg. “There has been and is a close collaboration with Epiroc since many years, and AF Ghella is well acquainted with both the organization and their products. Epiroc was able to deliver equipment in a short time, which was especially important in this project. Apart from some small start-up challenges, the equipment has worked well, and we are very satisfied with both the equipment and support from Epiroc both in Norway and Sweden.” “Epiroc’s battery-electric machines are being increasingly utilized in underground operations, generating significant benefits including reduced emissions, lower noise, less heat and vibration, and significantly increased productivity,” said Sarah Hoffman, vice president sales & marketing, Epiroc Underground division. “We are proud that AF Ghella is using Epiroc equipment for such an important civil construction project in Oslo city. Together we are accelerating the transformation toward more sustainable construction operations. This project showcases the enormous potential our battery-electric solutions have in civil infrastructure applications.” AF Ghella is a joint venture between construction companies AF Gruppen of Norway and Ghella of Italy, created for this project. The construction project began in 2022 and is scheduled to be completed in 2027. The project was already utilizing Epiroc’s Boomer face drilling rigs for some time.
